We tell our new recruits that at Grant Thornton you

  • do more, faster;
  • build quality relationships; and
  • make your mark.

How does “do more, faster” apply to you and your career at Grant Thornton?

I really can do more, faster here. The structure here is such that I’m given as much as I can chew. If I’m doing well with one thing, my coach is ready to challenge me with the next thing. There are lots of opportunities to build on my experience—I’m pushed to move on to the next level. Within the team, I have a great opportunity to work on my own, think on my own and apply the skills that I have. I’ve been given opportunities to talk face to face with clients, ask analytical questions and work on documenting, right off the bat. There are great opportunities here to learn and gain interpersonal skills. The partners are always there to answer any questions, formal or informal.

What does “build quality relationships” mean to you?

It means face time with the client, learning about them and their business, and understanding their needs. Clients get to know me and my personality and I get to know them personally and understand their business the way they do. It means working with people who enjoy work and becoming friends with my co-workers. Everyone wants to be here; it’s a fun experience with friends/colleagues on the audit engagement. The partners get to know you on many levels too. Work is more than just a place to go to earn a few bucks. There are a lot of events: golf days, breakfast events, lunches, etc., and opportunities to always mingle and get to know your colleagues on both a professional and personal level. It’s truly a family type environment.

How have you been able to “make your mark”?

I’ve had the opportunity to get involved with a few charities, and I’ve been encouraged to get involved with the United Way Campaign. I was supported by the firm in personal social responsibility initiatives—my involvement with the social committee, for example.

I’ve had the chance to actively participate in meetings. My team and superiors listen to my considerations and take them to heart. With regards to the UFE preparation—the firm wants me to succeed and get myself out there as a member of the firm. I’m not just an auditor—at Grant Thornton I’m a valued member of the team.

There are lots of things outside of the realm of the day-to-day job to get involved in: campus initiatives, recruitment, focus groups and committees. My opinion and experience is valued here.

What community involvements do you have outside the office or through Grant Thornton?

I’ve been involved with the United Way Campaign, specifically with Gen Next in encouraging young professionals in the community to get involved.

The Hamilton district CA association offers various fund raising events for CAs in the community to get involved.
