While I’ve been an accountant for over 25 years, I began my career as an entrepreneur—first working for my father’s transportation company and later running my own successful business in Weyburn with my brother Jim. This background gives me deep insight into the challenges my clients face and has allowed me to deliver a high level of personalized service to the businesses and individuals I work with.
After earning my CGA designation, I became one of three founding members of Hillstead Melanson Accounting, which ultimately became Cogent CPA LLP which joined forces with Grant Thornton in 2019. In 2001, after completing my CGA designation, my family and I moved to Regina to run a new location for Cogent, and I’ve been providing accounting services such as compliance, corporate set up and restructuring advice to my small business, farming and individual clients out of this location ever since.
Over the years, I’ve been involved with many community organizations, including CGA Saskatchewan, where I served as president for two terms. I was awarded a Fellowship designation after being nominated by my peers for my dedication to the accounting profession. I also spent many years playing, coaching and being part of the executive committee of the Weyburn Soccer Association—an organization near and dear to my heart—and am honoured to have an award named after me: the Don Hillstead Volunteer Appreciation Award.
Outside of work, I love spending time at White Bear Lake with my wife and family, golfing, kayaking and relaxing. I’m also proud to be one of the “wisest” members at the cross-fit gym I attend, where I keep fit so I can keep up with my eight grandchildren!
