As a partner in the Grant Thornton US tax practice, and leader of the firm’s international private client service practice, I’m responsible for providing tax advisory services to high net worth individuals with business interests in the United States, Australia, Mexico and Canada. For instance, I help individuals emigrating from Canada to minimize their departure tax, assist new immigrants to make informed tax decisions, advise Canadians on their US real estate holdings and strategies for minimizing US estate tax, and work with US citizens resident in Canada. I also assist high net worth individuals with their cross-border affairs.

Over the last 26 years, I’ve helped clients resolve a wide range of outbound international tax matters, including issues related to IRS controversy, cross-border tax, estate and succession planning, citizenship and immigration, the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and the OECD’s Common Reporting Standard (CRS).

I’ve been admitted to the bar associations of the US Tax Court, the United States Supreme Court and the tax courts of California, Washington and Alberta. Additionally, I’m a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), a member of both the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and the American Bar Association tax section, and a licensed foreign legal consultant in Alberta.

On the volunteer front, I sit on the Board of Advisors for the Journal of International Tax and the International Tax Program at New York University School of Law. I am also a frequent writer and speaker on tax-related matters for various publications and organizations including STEP Canada, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, Calgary Estate Planning Council, Canadian Tax Highlights, Canadian Tax Foundation and LEXPERT to name a few.

I received my LL.M (Tax) from New York University School of Law, my JD cum laude jointly from New York University School of Law and Willamette University and my BA in Economics from the University of California Berkeley. As an undergraduate, I was also a member of the University of California Berkeley’s intercollegiate swim team.
