Playing sports. Crafting. Canoeing. Going on nature walks. These are all things many Canadians grew up doing at summer camp. They’re also activities that children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities can do at Camp Gencheff during the summer and on weekends throughout the year, giving them a chance to get away from home and try something new, while providing respite to their families and caregivers.

Camp Gencheff has been hosting campers since 1961 in Stratford, on PEI’s south coast, and throughout the last five decades has always worked closely with local communities across the Island. From the group of trustees who bought the sea-side land, built the original cabins and launched the Camp in its first year and the many businesses that donated supplies and labour to expand it into a modern, year-round facility in 1992, to the companies and organizations that continue to contribute funding and volunteers throughout the year and the Board members, like Alan Brown, who keep the wheels of the organization running, Camp Gencheff inspires communities to give.

Today, about 150 people enjoy time at Camp Gencheff – and seniors’ groups, Scouts and other groups use the facilities and expansive beachfront property, as well, making it a true community hub, says Alan. “And many staff have become world class leaders, paying it forward and demonstrating what an engaging and inspirational impact Camp Gencheff has had on communities across PEI and North America.”
