Born in 1964 from a national project to mark Canada’s 100th anniversary as a nation, Charlottetown, PEI’s Confederation Centre of the Arts hopes to inspire people across the province and througout the country through visual and performing arts and to celebrate an evolving Canada, says CEO, Steve Bellamy.

“From First Nations communities and long-time Islanders to new Canadians and international stars, the Centre welcomes diverse artists and audiences, giving them a chance to connect through their stories, cultures, and perspectives.”

The impact on local communities is significant. Children can join dance, art, acting or choir programs, some of which perform internationally, in venues from Italy and France to New York and Toronto. People can hear lectures given by recipients of the annual Symons Medal including distinguished Canadians like Senator Murray Sinclair, novelist Antonine Maillet, and environmentalist David Suzuki. And with the TD Confederation Centre Young Company, young people from different backgrounds write, direct, design and perform their own stories through shows like Aqsarniit, involving music, dance and theatre.

Confederation Centre of the Arts brings Islanders together to celebrate local, regional, Canadian and international artists and performers, while providing year-round educational opportunities. The Centre welcomes more than 250,000 people through its halls each year and employs more than 400 individuals. Not only does the Centre engage people across PEI, but audiences and performers can see themselves reflected in its programs – and feel a stronger connection to their communities and Canada because of it.
