National US Corporate Tax Leader

Julia Klann

I am the National US Corporate Tax Leader, leveraging more than 15 years of experience assisting both corporate and personal clients with US and cross-border tax issues, including matters related to US tax compliance and planning. Cross-border tax can be challenging to navigate with different rules and implications between Canada and the US. For me, it’s about bringing clarity to my clients to help them make the strategic decisions they need to drive their business forward.

As a subject matter expert in the field of US and cross-border tax, I advise clients on numerous cross-border transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and reorganizations. My in-depth knowledge of US international outbound tax law and the US tax laws for controlled foreign corporations (CFCs) and passive foreign investment companies (PFICs) allows me to provide structuring advice that makes sense from a business perspective, while managing deemed US income inclusions for my clients. I work closely with an international network to structure tax favourable US investments.

Drawing on extensive experience dealing with state income and sales tax laws, I assist clients in determining their exposures; negotiate voluntary disclosure agreements with the various state bodies; and assist with state income, franchise and sales tax compliance.

I have designed and taught two US tax courses for the University of Waterloo and have been named in the bestselling book Total Rethink as the best tax mind in US deal planning.

A graduate of the University of Waterloo’s Master of Accounting program, I am a Canadian trained CPA, CA. I also hold a US CPA designation and a Master of Science in Taxation from Golden Gate University. Originally from Stoney Creek, Ontario, I currently live in Kitchener-Waterloo with my husband and three boys. As part of my commitment to the community where I live, I sit on the Board of Directors for Nutrition For Learning in Kitchener-Waterloo. Outside of work I enjoy biking, reading and travelling.
