Within days of buying a PEI charter bus company in April, 2005, Mike Cassidy was asked by City Hall if he could design and implement a transit system in Charlottetown – by September. One of the first and “makes it all worthwhile” fares was a single mother and her young daughter who were thrilled to go to the mall – with no car and no economic way of getting there, they hadn’t been in two years.

Starting 14 years ago with just four buses and about 75 passengers per day, T3 Transit, one of the most efficient transit operations in Canada, now has 15 buses carrying 3,400 passengers per day throughout Charlottetown and neighbouring Stratford and Cornwall.

Mike’s philosophy of “moving people daily is our responsibility” shows commitment and passion for municipal public transit. Like the students who enjoy cost effective transportation after they’ve paid their tuition and rent. Or the teenagers who can have the independence to go to a movie on their own in a way that’s safe and secure. Or the mom and dad who can get to work on a day when one of the kids needs to use the family car.

Seeing people from every walk of life waiting at the bus stop makes Mike appreciate how vital public transit is to everyone in Greater Charlottetown, and how it’s become an important part of the fabric of the community. Moving people is Mike’s way of life.
