About the client

1007801 Ontario Ltd. is a family business that operates three prominent and reputable home improvement and building supply stores in the Muskoka, Ontario region. Founded in 1993, the second-generation business, run by three siblings, operates Severn Timber Mart, Brechin Timber Mart, and Home and Cottage Interiors. The siblings have taken pride in establishing the Company as a trusted source for not only building products, but also professional advice, extensive product knowledge, and reliable service.

When the siblings made the difficult decision to sell, it was important to find a buyer that would respect and uphold the family legacy. The Connected Group—a network of community-centered businesses within the construction, lumber, and building materials industries, including existing Timber Mart locations—brought ‘hands-on’ operating experience and industry knowledge. Most importantly, The Connected Group embodied shared company values and a desire to uphold the reputation of the family business.

Our Transactions team collaborated with colleagues, across service lines, to assist the shareholders in all aspects of the sales process. They provided a comprehensive team approach, including pre-sale planning, tax planning and structuring, a targeted marketing strategy and a thorough sell-side M&A process to help put shareholders at ease each step of the way and create a successful outcome for all parties.

The client experience

“The Grant Thornton team provided the expertise and support essential to the successful sale of our family business. The team took the time to understand our business and what we were looking for in a buyer who would have similar values to ours. They provided us with a detailed strategy and provided guidance through each of the critical stages of working towards and completing the sale. They were sensitive to avoiding disruptions to our operations during this process, and assisted us with our final negotiations, being mindful of the best interests of our family moving forward.”
